HISTORY

Mettananda Vihara Dhamma Yeiktha has been inaugurated on the 17th of October 1999 in order to carry out many noble objectives. At present we have witnessed endless wars and fights among countries, nations, tribes, ethnic groups and organizations due to hatred, anger, jealousy, self-interests, uncontrollable egos and the false prides. All these have resulted in much anger, deeper hatred and many cycles of revenge. It is quite obvious that something is really necessary to undo this situation in a way that might console mankind and fulfill its needs to live harmoniously in a peaceful and pleasant world. When considering what will be the best remedy to cure all this hatred, anger, jealousy, self-interests, uncontrollable egos and false prides or, in short, devilishness, it has been understood, as something strongly convinced and also profoundly believed, that the boundless metta, an unconditional loving-kindness, is the most crucial, effective and powerful remedy of all.

Accordingly, it is our conviction that we must try our utmost to encompass this entire world with metta, loving-kindness, and moral principles and practices based on virtue or dhamma grounds. To achieve that goal, we believe that one should begin at an individual level, undertaking little by little, until one attains to full capacity. As a Burmese saying goes, 'one cannot do it alone, but ten thousand are necessary', our collective efforts in solidarity will take us wide and far. This is the main reason to establish the Mettananda Vihara Dhamma Yeiktha as a place of congregation and retreat for those who value, adore and practise metta, the members of a metta-based community. In other words, Mettananda Vihara Dhamma Yeiktha is the heart of the metta-based-community.

Ever since the opening ceremony of the Vihara, metta-dhamma courses, sati-pattana vipassana retreats, i.e., training courses on how to observe the total awareness of one's body and mind were given regularly. They will continue every other Saturday together with Dhamma classes and Abbidhamma (Buddhist doctrine and philosophy) classes. In the future, there will also be special retreats and classes occasionally.

Mettananda Vihara also provides classes for Burmese youth, both girls and boys, to learn Buddhist culture and related knowledge, Burmese language and, literature, Burmese tradition and customs and indeed all that needs to be learnt as good Burmese Buddhists. These classes are open every other Sunday. The aim is to preserve Burmese culture, tradition and customs as well as Buddhist tradition for those who are away from their homeland, Burma. On the other hand, this initiative also aims at the sustainability and continuity of the Mettananda Vihara itself. The seasonal festivals will be celebrated annually as they come along. For example, Thingyan (the New Year celebration and the water festival), Visak (the festival offering ropes and necessities to monks entering the Buddhist lent) and Kahtain (the festival offering ropes and necessities to monks in order to celebrate the successful completion of observing the Buddhist lent), etc.. By these means, each and everyone of us will be reminded of and given the opportunity to practise Burmese traditions and Buddhist culture even in a foreign land.
